Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes (englisch)
The Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes (ING) operates the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope (WHT), the 2.5m Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) and the 1.0m Jacobus Kapteyn Telescope (JKT) on behalf of the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC) of the United Kingdom, the Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) of the Netherlands, and the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) in Spain. The ING is located at the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory, La Palma, Spain.
Located on a mountain top on the Canary island of La Palma, the construction of this world-wide largest telescope has been completed in 2003; it is now operated by an international collaboration of 17 institutes. An inauguration ceremony took place in October 2003. After calibrations, first physics measurements started at the end of 2003, in between commissioning of the telescope parts. First results were presented at various meetings and conferences in 2004. Since September/October 2004 multiple sources are being observed.
